arc africa architects contemporary design – eagle canyon

arc africa architects made a notable statement of modernity. this home is an aesthetic solution to family living in a gated community, where perimeter walls and electrified fencing do not exist.  within what is essentially a white shell, lit after dark with low voltage down lights, the colour scheme is muted: white; off whites; creams; grey and black. colour is restricted to occasional fabrics and artwork.

contemporary residence overlooking a sizable fishing lake in the vast, undulating community, golf estate of eagle canyon, north west of johannesburg. conceived and project managed by stephen bibby it took two years to build and is a testimony to individual imagination and aesthetics.

the multi-purpose living with links between the areas, which would engender interaction with family members and guests while handling daily activities like cooking. the double story structure manifests as three distinct compartments, emphasised by pillars and planes, which in turn are painted in varying shades to further define them. essentially the rectangular ground floor comprises these three compartments delineated by central pillars, yet interlinked – apart from the guest suite on one side close to the swimming pool – which has its own separate entrance. the living area then extends from the media room through the large central sitting area to the kitchen and dining spaces at the opposite end of the rectangle.

large off white porcelain tiles clad the floors throughout and extend to the covered terrace where sitting and dining space is generous. steps descend to the lawns and the lake below and the views from the entire living / entertainment area across the shallow valley are panoramic.

contemporary architecture is the design and technical use of age old elements combined with new ideas and technology. arranging them into modern shapes and spaces. steel, concrete and glass are our base elements, using green environmental concepts. orientating the building towards the best views and reducing the harsh west sun and maximizing the use of natural ventilation.
